Legal and Licensed Music

The AVLA (Audio/Video Licensing Agency Inc.) licenses copyrighted material for Canadian artists

Playing legal music is only fair to the artists and keeps the new music coming!  I wouldn't want to pay a taxi to drive me in a stolen car any more than I would want to pay a dj to play music he/she didn't pay for.  I've personally extracted all of my music from CDs.  Nothing is downloaded - everything is paid for and licensed.  I also buy a special license each year from the Canadian Audio Video Licensing Agency (AVLA) for the computerized music I use - your assurance that you are hiring a professional who uses legal product.

Listen for yourself!

One of my favourite jobs is maintaining the FM sound system at the Starlite Drive-in theatre in Stoney Creek.  Their music & ad broadcasting system is the only one in existence similar to the mobile system I use.  Have a listen to my ads that air on 107.5 FM before the movies start.  These samples are in mp3 format and are extremely compressed for quick download, so they don't sound as good here as they do on the radio.

First, the Music:

The music speaks for itself!  Titles range back as far as 1934 and as new as selections released only days ago.  I consistently strive to stay ahead of new music.  Everything is meticulously processed and extracted from compact disc, volume-normalized and stored digitally for quick access.  Nothing is downloaded from the Internet.

What kind of variety will you find in that many songs?

  • Rock - 50/60's tunes (Beach Boys, Elvis, Steppenwolf...), classic rock (Bob Seger, CCR...), 80's hard rock (Van Halen, Billy Joel, ACDC, Aerosmith...), alternative and new rock.

  • Dance - Older dance tunes by artists like Gladys Night, 70's Disco (Blondie, Earth Wind & Fire), 80's Dance (Michael Jackson, Madonna, New Order, Depeche Mode, etc), 90's Euro/Dance, and all the new stuff: Underground, Hard House, Industrial, Techno, Electronica, Euro, plenty of imported tracks.

  • R&B, Hip Hop, Rap - Get your groove on to the older classics and the newer hits by artists like Beyonce, Nelly, Jay-Z, 50 Cent, Sean Paul, Justin Timberlake, R. Kelly and more.

  • Country - The older classics through to newer selections including Alan Jackson, Garth Brooks, Shania Twain, Dixie Chicks and more.

  • Salsa, Meringue, Latin Dance - Great party music from warmer places to heat up your party.

  • Jazz & Blues - Take it easy and kick back with some great Jazz, Rhythm & Blues or Drum & Bass tracks.

  • Adult Contemporary - A strange classification, usually referring to the classic slower songs people like to "get close" to.

  • Reggae, Calypso - Classic island music by artists like Bob Marley, not to mention the new hits.

  • Big Band, Ballroom - Timeless music from when recorded music was in its early stages digitally remastered on-the-fly for a great new sound.

  • Polka and Special Occasion - Traditional wedding polkas and special occasion music for any function.

Superior quality sound:

The process a song goes through before it leaves the speakers is a complicated one.  A lot happens behind the scenes to deliver a consistently seamless and great sounding performance everyone can hear effortlessly.

  • The process starts with CD extraction: Every song in my library is carefully extracted from its original CD source, and volume balanced before being stored for live play.  Wonder why the music volume always changes between songs when you are listening to disc jockeys that play from CD?  Every album is recorded at different peak volume levels - it's not humanly possible to anticipate volume changes and react in time when playing music live.  My digital process standardizes song volumes so every song peaks at the same level.
  • Playing the song: Before being played, music is processed, much like it is on FM radio.  Any time there's ambient noise to contend with (in your car while listening to the radio, or in a hall with people talking), sound processing is vital.

  • Before you continue, what is normalization/volume balancing?  This is a process where you soften the loud parts of a song, and turn up the quiet parts.  It's also known as compressing/limiting.  The result is a consistent volume level without any shocking surprises for the listener.
  • Multi-band volume normalization: Music you hear is separated into 5 frequency bands: Low, mid-low, midrange, mid-high, and high (similar to a 5-band equalizer).  Each band is volume-balanced individually according to carefully calibrated settings, recombined, and collectively volume-balanced once more.  This process ensures the older classics sound as "close" and fresh as the new music recorded on high-end digital equipment - absolutely no annoying volume changes in or between songs.
  • Perfect crossfading/song mixing: Just like FM radio, near the end of a song, the system reads the next track, analyzing its beginning to calculate where the best spot to start playing is, while calculating the best spot to leave the current song.  The result is seamlessly mixed music every time.
  • Beat Mixing and advanced song-play: You've heard "Live-to-air" mix shows Friday & Saturday nights on the radio, broadcasting from a club, now get ready for the ultimate dance club experience!  Not for your average wedding, this type of show caters to the discerning dance audience where sets of music carry the beat and dancing non-stop.
